*1984 (she/her) was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. She is an interdisciplinary performing artist, choreographer, dancer, and designer, based in the tri-border region between Basel (CH), Freiburg (DE), and Mulhouse (FR). Over 20 years in Europe have shaped a practice rooted in intercultural and spatial inquiry, blending choreography, installation, sound, text, video, and live performance to explore identity presentation, visibility, language, and embodied communication.
Recent projects include OMG – observation / motivation / glamorisation (2024), supported by cultural institutions and multiple residency programmes; quite quiet, examining Japanese femininity, currently in development since 2023.
Her previous works — TRAJECTORY (Sadler’s Wells, 2022), Have I ever spoken properly? (2020), and the FIGURATIVE series (2016–2019) — stem from anthropological and conceptually based research with physical movements and languages.
Her professional dance and performance career began at Aterballetto in Italy (2005–2009), and with Thoss Tanzkompanie at Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden (2009–2013), and subsequently with Ballett Basel at Theater Basel (2013–2016), after completing her studies at the Ecole Supérieure de Danse de Cannes Rosella Hightower in France, and at Codarts – Rotterdam University of the Arts, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in 2006. She received her Master’s degree in interdisciplinary design at the Masterstudio (Institute Experimental Design and Media Cultures) at the Basel Academy of Art and Design, HGK FHNW in January 2021.
